Surgery
The surgery section is dedicated to providing the most advanced care possible. We are staffed with board-certified veterinary surgeons and a well trained group of veterinary technicians and support staff. Collaboration with other specialists at CVS gives us the ability to improve patient care and solve complex problems. The caseload encompasses a wide range of procedures including soft tissue and orthopedic problems. We offer the most advanced orthopedic techniques including hip replacement, complex fracture repair and tibial plateau leveling osteomy (TPLO) for cruciate disease. Soft tissue procedures include oncologic (cancer), gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and urogenital surgery. At your initial visit, additional testing may include PennHIPP, x-rays, CT scans, joint taps or bloodwork. The practice is equipped with the latest in equipment and anesthesia, and patients are monitored continuously throughout anesthesia. A detailed report of your pet's visit will be sent to your family veterinarian. Our team approach with your primary care veterinarian will ensure your pet receives the best care available.

Ophthalmology
The ophthalmology section specializes in diseases and surgery of all animals' eyes. This includes reconstructive surgery of the orbit and eyelids, corneal surgery including transplants, glaucoma laser and filtration surgery, cataract surgery with artificial lens implantation, and vitreo-retinal surgery. Advanced imaging and electrodiagnostic procedures are also available. Available in South Charlotte.

Radiology
The radiology section is concerned with utilizing the latest imaging techniques to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of difficult medical and surgical conditions. Color-flow Doppler ultrasonography and ultrasound guided biopsy are often utilized to aid the other specialists in the hospital. Difficult radiographs are given to the radiologist for interpretation.

Dermatology
The dermatology service focuses on allergic and non-allergic skin disease. These diseases include endocrine and autoimmune disorders, infectious diseases, cutaneous manifestations of systemic disease, and chronic recurrent ear infections. The services offered by the dermatology section include intradermal skin testing, allergy immunotherapy, and the management of chronic diseases of the paw, nailbed, and ears. Available in Huntersville and Greensboro.

Internal Medicine
The internal medicine section offers a wide range of technologically advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in cardiology, gastroenterology, urology, pulmonary diseases, hematology, and infectious disease. Advanced procedures include video endoscopy, abdominal ultrasonography, and color-flow Doppler echocardiography.

Avian and Exotic Pets
The Avian and Exotic Pet Service at CVS is dedicated to providing advanced veterinary care for unusual pets. Cases can be seen with or without referral. Primary and preventative care are also offered at CVS for these unusual pets, without a referral. Advanced diagnostics such as on-site computed tomography (CAT scans) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be performed on our exotic patients. Our specialized instrumentation includes a rigid 2.7 mm Storz endoscope useful for laproscopy, tracheoscopy, gastroscopy, oral examination for small mammals and intubation of rabbits. Other treatments include trimming and extraction of rabbit and rodent teeth, antibiotic-impregnated polymethylmethacrylate (AIPPMA) beads for treatment of challenging abscesses, cryosurgery for right adrenal tumors in ferrets, among others. The practice is equipped with the most advanced anesthesia delivery and monitoring devices, including sevoflurane gas anesthesia, pulse oximetry, and Doppler monitoring equipment. Common surgeries include bird and reptile spays for the treatment and prevention of serious reproductive diseases, dental surgery in rabbits and rodents, insulinoma surgery in ferrets, and preventative spay and neuter surgeries in small mammals. Our service regularly collaborates with other specialties to improve patient care.

Behavior
The behavior section focuses on the management of complicated behavior problems of the dog and cat. This includes aggression, separation anxiety, phobias, and compulsive disorders. Following an extensive history, the treatment encompasses modifying the pet's behavior, environmental manipulation and pharmacological management.

Cardiology
The Cardiology Service at Carolina Veterinary Specialists offers comprehensive cardiac evaluation and treatment including echocardiography, electrocardiography, radiographic evaluation, blood pressure measurement, and pacemaker interrogation. We aim to not only provide the highest standards of therapy, but also to ensure the best quality of life for your beloved pet dealing with heart disease. Soon we will offer invasive procedures like pacemaker implantation and correction of some congenital cardiac defects such as pulmonic stenosis and patent ductus arteriosis.

Oncology
The medical oncology service provides consultation, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A definitive diagnosis of cancer is based on cytology or biopsy and histopathology and accurate interpretation of the obtained samples. Patients diagnosed with cancer are offered a comprehensive evaluation referred to as "staging" that often includes radiography, ultrasonography, and evaluation of regional lymph nodes to determine the extent of disease and rule out the presence of metastasis (cancer spread). Cancer treatment may include surgery, state of the art chemotherapy, and referral for radiation therapy. The goal of our medical oncology team is to provide patients with the best quality of life possible in the most caring and compassionate way. Available in Greensboro.

Neurology
The neurology section specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Typical disorders include seizures, balance problems, and disc disease. Frequent diagnostic tests include spinal fluid analysis, myelography, computed tomography (CT), MRI and electrodiagnostics. Common surgeries include those for Intervertebral Disc Disease, Wobbler's Syndrome, and Lumbosacral Disease.

Rehabilitation
The rehabilitation service is dedicated to improving your pet's quality of life. A thorough evaluation and exercise program is designed specifically for each pet. Depending on your pet's needs, various modalities are available. These can include underwater treadmill, land treadmill, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound, hot/cold therapy and therapeutic exercises. Rehabilitation candidates include arthritic, overweight, athletic, neurologic and orthopedic pets. It is common for us to work in conjunction with your pet's surgeon or veterinarian. Our ultimate goal is to return your pet to normal, or near normal, function after injury or surgery. All services, including evaluations, are available at our Winston Salem office. Evaluations are available in the Greensboro office.

The role of your primary care veterinarian
Carolina Veterinary Specialists accepts new clients only by referral from your family veterinarian. Your veterinarian knows your pet's medical history and we rely on he or she to detect the conditions that require advanced specialty care. In order to provide the best course of treatment, we need to work closely with your family veterinarian to optimally manage your pet's care. After your initial visit to the hospital, we contact your veterinarian by telephone and provide them with a detailed written report.
